You may call or email the Wellness Center for assistance initiating counseling services.

Availability

Counseling services are available during the fall and spring semesters and are available to eligible, enrolled students. They are not available over the summer, winter, and some school breaks.

Cost

Counseling services are covered by student tuition and fees. We do not bill insurance or collect any money for services provided.

Information for Minors

Students who are under the age of 18 will need consent from a parent/guardian. Contact the Wellness Center for the consent form and instructions on how to submit it.

Students who believe that obtaining a parent/guardian signature will be problematic or cause harm, talk with your counselor at the initial appointment to explore options.

Crisis Intervention

Urgent appointments are available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for students experiencing thoughts of harming themself or others, or who have recently experienced a traumatic event.

The purpose of the urgent crisis appointment is to provide short-term support to individuals in distress. These appointments typically last up to 30 minutes, though may extend beyond that time in some circumstances where immediate safety is concerned.

During crisis appointments, the counselor will work with the individual to understand what prompted or preceded the crisis. The counselor and individual will work collaboratively to interrupt or reduce the intensity of the downward spiral of thoughts, feelings, and behavioral reactions to a crisis, identify coping strategies for the short term, and develop a plan for longer-term support, or more intensive support if needed.

Appropriate concerns for the use of urgent appointments include recent:

  • Thoughts, attempt(s), plan, or intent to die by suicide
  • Thoughts of wanting to physically harm others
  • Sexual or physical assault
  • Death or terminal diagnosis of a loved one
  • Emergence of psychotic symptoms and/or mania

Urgent appointments are not intended to supplement or take the place of scheduled counseling visits.

Additional crisis resources can be found by navigating to the Crisis and Community Resources page.

Benefits of Counseling

Studies show a correlation between mental health and academic success.

Our mental health services help students develop coping strategies and build resilience that helps them manage stress and other difficult emotions that can impact their focus and performance, enhancing their academic potential while achieving personal growth. Whether facing challenges related to stress, anxiety, depression, or something else, our professional mental health team is committed to supporting students to navigate these hurdles and succeed.

The Wellness Center provides short-term individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, skills-based workshops, self-help and prevention-focused outreach programming, and referral assistance to university or other specialty resources in the community. Individual counseling includes the therapeutic assessment and treatment of mental health concerns. Clinicians work collaboratively with students to identify goals and determine an appropriate course of treatment, with appointments typically being scheduled every two to three weeks.

Common concerns include, but are not limited to:

  • Adjustment problems: navigating transitions or new life circumstances
  • Mood or anxiety problems: depression, general or social anxiety, perfectionism, body image issues, low self-esteem
  • Interpersonal problems: break-ups, communication and assertiveness development, family issues, other relational conflicts
  • Coping with interpersonal trauma and traumatic events
  • Misuse or mild abuse of substances
  • Grief and loss
  • Developmental concerns: exploration and support focused on phase of life issues or questions/concerns related to personal and/or community identity.

Services are available during the fall and spring semesters, but not during summer, winter, or certain breaks.

Complete the Request Counseling Services form, and a counselor will contact you to schedule your first appointment.

You may also contact the Wellness Center with questions or for assistance.

Students under 18 will need consent from a parent or guardian.

If obtaining parental consent feels uncomfortable or potentially harmful, discuss this with your counselor at your first appointment. They will help you explore your options.

Urgent appointments are available Monday to Friday, 9am-3pm.

For after-hours emergencies, contact Campus Safety or Resident Directors for immediate support.

We offer individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, skills-based workshops, self-help resources, prevention outreach programs, and referrals to other community resources when needed.

Appointments are generally scheduled every two to three weeks. However, the frequency may vary depending on your needs and the nature of your concerns.

Counseling services are available through the student Wellness Fee, which is included in tuition and fees. There are no additional charges for services and we do not bill insurance for services provided. This eliminates financial barriers that often prevent individuals from seeking help in the community.

Student confidentiality is very important to us. All health and counseling records are kept confidential and protected from unauthorized disclosure under the Under Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Records may only be released to an identified party when there is a signed authorization from the student or parent/guardian in cases where the student is less than 18 years of age.

We provide crisis intervention and support for students dealing with trauma, grief, and loss. Urgent appointments are available if you’re experiencing a recent traumatic event or loss.

Occasionally, students benefit from services outside of the Wellness Center due to needing more frequent services, longer-term care, or because their mental health needs extend beyond what the Wellness Center can thoroughly and ethically serve.

In these rare cases, our providers will assist with the referral and connection to the most appropriate resource. Referrals might occur immediately following the initial assessment or at any time during the treatment process based on assessed needs.

Concerns that may likely be addressed through an off-campus referral include, but are not limited to:

  • Active or severe eating disorders that present significant medical complications or concern
  • Significant substance use
  • Active psychotic symptoms
  • Chronic suicidality and/or recent history of suicide attempt(s)
  • Severe and chronic self-injury
  • Serious and persistent mental health disorders that require intensive monitoring and treatment
  • Aggressive and destructive behaviors toward counseling staff

Students who are already connected with a provider off-campus are encouraged to continue with that provider for continuity of care purposes.

For ethical and effective treatment, it is best practice to receive treatment from one mental health provider.

If you are already seeing a mental health provider off-campus or virtually, and you are able to, we encourage you to remain with that provider for your continuity of care.
